Hospitality for Social Justice is building a community of businesses committed to eliminating the injustices within the food and hospitality industry.
HSJ GUIDING PRINCIPLES
Hospitality is a critical component of transformative justice. Hospitality is, at its core, inclusive of the safety, healing, and accountability of the communities it both creates and serves.
Workplaces should be centers for justice and equity.
We are committed to actively dismantling racism and white supremacy by deepening the knowledge and resources accessible to all people.
We are always learning: access to power is everyone’s right, and education is a tool for community transformation.
Growth only happens when we challenge ourselves to be vulnerable and take risks. To grow is hard; do it anyway.
We can only control our own actions; we are devoted to working on and taking care of ourselves.
We acknowledge the many shortcomings and blind spots in our industry. However, it is only our commitments as individuals to transformative work that will facilitate systemic change.
Who is an HSJ Partner?
Hospitality for Social Justice was created in partnership with industry leaders in an effort to build more equitable workplaces and provide quality employment for Fellows, representative of individuals who have historically been pushed to the margins.
Along with our core values, we believe that there are key components needed to build strong and effective partnerships. Below are principles that should be upheld by both the Drive Change team and our HSJ Business Partner. We also look to our Ethic of Care as a guide.
We agree to honest conversations about our capacities, needs, and experiences working on the ground. When we agree to a working committee, we take ownership of our end of the work and follow through on commitments. Communicating early and often is key to the work.
We strive to create communities of belonging where Drive Change fellows feel safe and supported to learn, grow, and take ownership of their careers.
We guide decision-making and evaluate shared progress through data analysis and frequent communication. If something is not working, brainstorm improved processes or alternate routes to get to our shared goals.
